Voting as you review and vice versa

Posted by Skeik - October 7th, 2008

My train of thought.

Why don't people review as they vote? Or at least review and vote better. A lot of people vote either 0 or 5 based on if it was decent or not, and that really seems ridiculous. Why only use the top and the bottom choices for voting. I think it's because people are too lazy to actually review a submission fully.

Like on reviews, when people give a movie a review score of below 4, do you REALLY think that the flash you reviewed deserves a score of 4? I can understand if it's not your type of movie, but when you give a movie a 0 is basically saying that you feel that it shouldn't even be on the site. If a movie isn't your cup of tea, you should still review apathetically (did I use that word right?)

At least that's what I think. A review is always going to be your opinion but I think you should try to take some of the personal feelings out of reviewing and voting and look at work from a neutral standpoint. Like, every so often I'll go to one of the top 50 submissions and look for people who 0 it. I mean, do these people really feel that those movies deserved to be blammed?

Look at these reviews for Waterlollies. I can't really say it makes me mad, but damn.

Good animation, but who wants to see something hopping around for 8 minutes? Waterlollies didn't even have much hopping in it from what I remember, seeing as how he was incapacitated. Like, people are giving Waterlollies a 4 because they think that the story sucked. Does that submission really deserve a 2.00 because the story wasn't up to par with you?

Look at this guy. http://nosoupforu.newgrounds.com/revie ws/

I mean, if your going to try to review things, at least try to be consistent. He gave Waterlollies a 4, Awesome Racer a 6 and Awesome Center Redux a 9. IMO there are so many contradictions in that kind of reviewing.

I dunno. Just something I was thinking about, I had to put it somewhere. I'm not complaining about the site or how it's going downhill blah blah blah, I'm just saying that reviews don't really seem to correlate to what people think the movie should be rated anymore.

DONT WATCH NG WAR AND FRONT PAGE POST!
ITS DANGEROUS!

I didn't watch NG war. What's that?

Oh wait, listening to it now

people vote 5, or 0. because that will make the most difference, if u think the movie is under rated voting 5 will affect it more than voting 4, or if u think its and over rated movie, voting 0 will affect the movie more.

its just math...

Well, thats not the problem. It's math but the voting system is supposed to be how you feel. You aren't trying make an overrated less popular, you're trying to get your opinion out there. If you feel it's overrated, say it's overrated but don't vote a decent movie 0 when it doesn't deserve it. Don't vote 5 when it doesn't deserve it either.

Eh. Thats the way I think now anyway.

they're called alts, and they make up approximately 42% of newgrounds, they feed on the reveiws of their enemies submissions, and post wildly on the bbs

Stamper's review made me laugh out loud.

Also Hi.

"animation isnt everything" 0/10
so that makes animation nothing?

I think the extremely polar voting can be quite simply explained. People think everything deserves a certain rating. Most of the time, the flash either has a score that's lower, or higher than what any one viewer might think it deserves. So, instead of simply voting what we think it deserves, we vote such that the score makes it closer to what we think it observes. If a flash has a rating of 4, but we think it deserves a 3, we'll give it a zero, to bring it down closer to 3. Make sense?

It makes sense but that's not how I think it should be.

I agree with the undead prostitute dealer above me.

Reviews are one thing--I assume that authors skip most of the reviews with highly polarized ratings, and that's just obnoxious for them, because those reviews are there mostly for the author to learn from their mistakes. As far as that goes, I'd like to see people just post fewer reviews, because I know they aren't about to actually spend time thinking about what to tell the author.

As far as voting goes, I definitely agree with Zombie-Pimp et al. It's for everyone to decide on their own what they think is more important, I suppose. People probably aren't going to change the way they vote, but it all more or less balances out, in the end, just from the sheer volume of votes. You just havew to bear in mind the drastic voting when you look at flash scores. That said, I think the system would be improved by allowing only one vote per user, I don't know if that would be practical, though.

yeha i agree :3 well i would gladly review IF I WASENT BANNED FOREVER >:O i hate this site -_- i only gave one bad review and BAM! banned forever. okay enough abotu me lol well i think that sometimes people are just kinda well, comparing things to other movies/games in the genre like this review "It's okay. But for a collab I was expecting alot more." for fucks sake it got a 4.0! so why does it deserve to be compared to other collabs if it dosent deserve to get into the collab section -_-

Whenever I write a review, I only write one when I really like it or if the thing is by my friend or so.
I know, I'm such a butthead for that, but at least I reply to every review I get!

But seriously, I have no clue why people just give some akward scores like 0 to Waterlollies, because it wasn't funny but then the next second they give some Awesome cartoon a 10...

What the heck guys?

Polar voting is a problem, but NG people are lazy and don't like to think, so they do that kind of voting so they don't need to think.

Polar reviews are idiotic, and I can honestly say I've never done it. If I give something a 10, I want to give it a ten. If I give it a zero, it gets deleted (since most of them are shallow remarks about the idiocy of the flash aka SMG/DarkKingBernard), so not everyone does it. It's just the laziness of NG.

Oh, and how do you know about that 5ing and 0ing, if you don't do it yourself? It's not like they record how many times a flash has been 5ed or 0ed... Or do you just assume things? HRM? HRRRRRRRRRM?! Nah, I'm joshing. We all know they do it.

If I could review this post, I would give it a 0 >:(

Personally, my style of voting changes based on what stage in the portal it is at.

If it's under judgement still, I'll give it either a 0 or a 5 most the time just to make sure the worthy flashes get past that stage as quickly as possibly and the spam ones get deleted.

Once a submission has passed judgement I vote on it's quality for the most part, giving lots of 4s, 3s, 2s, and 1s along with the occasional 5 or 0. If a submission seems severely over or underrated I'll go with a polar vote, however.

After a submission has gone through a portal, if it's a game or movie that I really love that I don't feel has been given its fair due or score, (such a Amorphous+, by the way) then I'll daily 5 it just to try and get the game to where I thnk it should be. In the same merit, if there's something that isn't of that high of quality in the Top 50, I'll daily 0 it if I think it doesn't deserve its rating.

What makes me the most mad, however, is the people who vote more on stuff like voilence or "OmG dis has sonic and/or mario dis iz so kewl!!" than on real originality, concept, or quality. The Sonic Shorts Colabs, to me, are an example of this. They're some are kind of funny, but a lot of the humor falls flat to me and some of the shorts are of much lesser quality than others. But because of the many 11-year-old Sonic Freaks we have, there's always one or two of the colabs in the top 50 at the same time. Then you have CrookedSixPence's movies, which are some of the most well done flashes I have ever seen in my life, which I've never seen in the top 50 because people can't quite understand how good they really are, or they just aren't their thing.

Waterlollies definitely deserves high marks for animation. I don't see why so many people say it sucks just because they don't like the way it's presented. It may be true the movie seemed to have more to do with graphics than story, but nothing with the quality of Waterlollies should ever receive a 0.

I try to be consistent with my reviewing. I'm not always successful, though.
Of course, that nosoupforu guy has no idea what he's even saying.

People like to vote 0's or 5's just because it's effective, but it makes so much more sense to actually vote what you think a Flash really deserves. I give lots of 3's, 4's, and 5's. Occasionally I give straight-up 0's. It depends on what the quality or the purpose of a movie is (and I say "purpose" because there's a lot of spam in the Portal.)

So yeah.
That's part of the reason Mastermind: World Conqueror deserves its score. =)

welcome to newgrounds
you must be new

I'm not new, this is just something I was thinking about.

I don't want people to change their opinions on movies, I just want people to vote with some consistency.

I have to agree with you there, people vote on a low basis because they are either stupid, or just plain lazy, I mean really, theres a great flash on front page, and theres always going to be ONE idiot voting less than 5. And also, take note that there young/stupid kids here, so mostly "it wuz ok but itz knot g8, u can du betta". that talk is annoying, and I seem to be going off topic, time to go away now...

Also hi.
